Juvenile Fines and Fees Undermine Entire Notion of Family Courts

In an opinion piece for The Root, Joshua Branch points out the hypocrisy of US Family Courts that look to family and community to support young people, then burden these supports with fines placed on youth who cannot pay. He says the juvenile justice system’s fines and fees especially threaten the blended and nontraditional families common in communities of color by making them liable for these fees, which disproportionately affect youth of color due to their overrepresentation in the juvenile justice system.
