Are Federal Courts Harsher on Native American Offenders?

A recent article in Voice of America examines whether Native Americans receive more police attention and harsher treatment in the court system than do other Americans. NCCD has shown that Native American youths are 30% more likely than white youths to be referred to juvenile courts instead of having their charges dropped. Native American youths are also 10% more likely to be held in confinement rather than be released while awaiting court appearances.
