NCCD Now: Media for a Just Society 2018

NCCD

More than ever, those in the media who doggedly work to investigate important societal issues and produce compelling stories with integrity deserve our support and commendation. When news is tweeted using 280 characters or less, and the US president blames the media for many of our country’s woes, the importance of fact-based, in-depth reporting and exceptional writing and filmmaking is starkly clear.

For more than 25 years, NCCD has honored media whose work furthers public understanding of social justice issues through our Media for a Just Society Awards program. In particular, we look for media that explore the issues around the social systems that NCCD works to reform: child welfare, juvenile justice, criminal justice, and adult protection. We annually recognize finalists and winners in the categories of book, film, print/online journalism, radio, TV/video, and youth media. For the 2018 awards, nominations and submissions numbered more than 150. You can see the full list of finalists here.

We offer Media for a Just Society Award finalists the opportunity to offer their insights and talk about their recognized work in blog posts. Once again, we will run these blog posts in a series on the NCCD website. Please check back each week as we publish another blog post, which will be listed below upon publication.

Congratulations to each 2018 Media for a Just Society Award finalist! We thank you for your hard work and perseverance as you labor to shine a light on complex social issues in order to create a more just and equitable society.
