Announcing the Guest Judges for the 2017 Distinguished Achievement Award

The Media for a Just Society Awards provide the only national recognition of media that furthers public understanding of criminal justice, juvenile justice, child welfare, and adult protection issues. NCCD celebrates books, films, journalism, radio/podcasts, and youth media that shine light on the darkest areas of our country’s social service systems. Winners have included journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates (“The Black Family in the Age of Mass Incarceration”), author Michelle Alexander (The New Jim Crow), and director David Simon (HBO’s The Wire).

Each year, one exceptional work is singled out to receive the Distinguished Achievement Award. This special award honors media that has lasting impact and that provides the most profound insight into our social systems. Past Distinguished Achievement Award winners include author Bryan Stevenson (Just Mercy), filmmakers Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi (Making a Murderer), and director Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station).

This year the Distinguished Achievement Award will be decided by our three eminent guest judges.

Jonathan Capehart is a journalist at The Washington Post. Mr. Capehart appears regularly on MSNBC as a contributor discussing politics and social issues; he hosts the podcast Cape Up in addition to his extensive writing activities.

Rabia Chaudry is an attorney and senior fellow at the United States Institute of Peace. Ms. Chaudry co-hosts and co-produces the podcast Undisclosed and is the author of the book Adnan’s Story, about Adnan Syed, whose legal case is the subject of the first season of the podcast Serial.

Mike de la Rocha is the founder and CEO of the social impact and advocacy firm Revolve Impact. An advocate, artist, and entrepreneur, Mr. de la Rocha also co-manages John Legend’s #FREEAMERICA campaign to end mass incarceration.
