NCCD Evaluates L.A. County’s Approach to Keeping Kids out of the Juvenile Justice System
Governing magazine covers NCCD’s evaluation of outcomes related to an actuarial risk assessment tool used to score the likelihood of foster children committing crimes that lead to juvenile detention. Between 2012 and 2014, the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services assessed youth regarding factors associated with criminal behavior. The goal was to identify high-risk youth before they became justice system-involved and target prevention efforts toward those individuals. Dr. Jesse Russell of NCCD, who is quoted in the article, said the evaluation results represent a tentative first step in applying predictive analytics to a child welfare system.
